Recently I asked the resident wine expert at my local wine store, Inari Wines, to recommend some inexpensive, but good value wines for everyday consumption, wines in the $10-$20 range. I live alone, so I don’t enjoy drinking a more expensive bottle unless I can share it with others. One of these value wines was 2010 La Vieille Ferme Red AOC Ventoux. The grapes for this wine, a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, and Cinsault, come from the well-known Mont Ventoux appelation and the wine is made by the Perrin Family, who also produce Château de Beaucastel wines. I decided to open it tonight.
I tasted the wine at room temperature, which gave it a more syrupy quality without the sticky sweetness. The grape blend is complex, but the aroma and taste are less so: a smooth blend of cherry, cassis (blackcurrant), and blackberry, with a little spice.
I enjoyed this wine as a sipper without food, but my friends, Wine Harlots, in their review of the 2009 vintage, recommend serving it slightly chilled with bread, cheese, and charcuterie. One of my wine friends on Facebook said it’s one of those wines you can drink with picnic fare such as fried chicken. In other words, it’s an inexpensive, tasty wine that anyone can enjoy with or without food.
